Sweden, Lapland - Biellugis Trail (5 days)
Choosing a multi-day horseback tour on an Icelandic horse in the mountains is a wonderful way to experience the Scandinavian highlands. You will get to know the Icelandic horse, spend time in nature, sit around an open fire, learn about Sámi culture, and sleep in a traditional Sámi tent hut (lavvu). What matters here is not the clock or modern gadgets, but rather the horse, the riding, the landscape, the weather, the companionship, and the food. The tour takes place in the low mountain region west of Kiruna and east of Kebnekaise, on the southern side of the Kalix River. Few tourists find their way to this area, allowing you to enjoy a peaceful and undisturbed wilderness experience.
After being picked up in Kiruna, you will be served dinner at the horse farm at approximately 6:00 PM. You will spend the night in the guesthouse in comfortable twin rooms. The first day of riding begins the following morning. You will be assigned a horse suited to your riding ability and experience, and the guides will review the itinerary, the horses, and the equipment with you. Then you set off on horseback into the magnificent mountain landscape. Most of the riding takes place off-trail or along narrow paths, allowing you to fully appreciate the Icelandic horse’s remarkable ability to navigate varied terrain. Depending on the conditions, you will ride at different speeds. The route takes you across open mountain plateaus, over marshlands, and through forests. Since the tour takes place in mountain terrain, weather conditions must be taken into account, and the route may need to be adjusted if necessary.
You will spend two nights in a traditional tent hut (lavvu), sleeping in sleeping bags around the central fireplace. It is therefore recommended that you have some prior experience sleeping in a tent. Each day you stop for lunch, which is prepared over an open fire. Meals consist of local specialties such as game and fish, cooked in the traditional way over the fire. Upon arrival at each overnight camp, everyone helps care for the horses and prepare the meals. As you travel together with the horses and all necessary equipment, you will experience the feeling of a mobile, nomadic lifestyle. A pack horse carries much of the shared gear, but each rider packs their personal belongings in saddlebags attached to their own horse. For washing during the trip, you use the crystal-clear, fresh water from the mountain streams.
On the first riding day, you travel through forests, across marshlands, and up into the mountains to the overnight camp near Biellugis. You stop for lunch along the way. After breakfast the following morning, you ride westward on a day excursion before returning to the same camp. This day’s ride takes place entirely above the tree line, offering spectacular panoramic views. The tour concludes on the afternoon of the third day, when you ride back to the starting point. From there, you are driven by car back to the horse farm.
On some departures, the second riding day continues farther west to Ratekjokk, where you spend the second night in a cabin, and the third day becomes a day ride. On other occasions, you ride to Ratekjokk on the third day instead. In that case, the horses remain in Ratekjokk, and you cross the Kalix River by boat before returning by car to the farm in Puoltsa (the route may also be ridden in the opposite direction).
This tour is ideal for those who are willing to give up some modern comforts in exchange for experiencing the mountains in a natural and authentic way, and who enjoy helping with practical tasks along the journey.
You ride about 15-25 km every day. The food is exclusive specialties from this area, for example reindeer meat and fish.
On this tour it is three full days of riding and four nights. First and last night in double rooms at the horse farm and two nights in Sami tepee.
Included: 4 nights, 3 days riding, guide (sve- and eng), full board (dinner day 1 - breakfast day 5), transfers
