Spain, Pyrenees - Trail Ride from the Pyrenees to the Sea
A stunning trail ride from the Pyrenees to the Mediterranean Sea. The ride begins in the beautiful mountains and continues into the lush forests of the Garrotxa. You will pass the Emporda region with its vineyards and olive groves before you reach the turquoise-colored Mediterranean Sea where you can enjoy the beautiful coastline and maybe even take a swim with your horse.
The cuisine on offer is fantastic and incudes everything from the famous Pyrenees veal to seafood and all enjoyed together with the region's fine wines.
The riding is at a lively pace with many chances to trot and gallop.
You will ride about 6-8 hours / day for 5 days. On some of the steep passes, you will sometimes need to lead your horses, so it is important to have good shoes. It is also important that, in addition to good riding skills, you have a good level of fitness as some of the days are long and with demanding riding.
You will take care of your horse during the week including grooming, saddling, etc.
Day 1 - Arrival
You will be met at the airport and driven to L'Abella, a typical Catalan village in the middle of the mountains. (About 2 hours). During the welcome dinner you will go through the week's program and discuss the type of horse that each rider prefers.
Day 2 - From the Pyrenees
The trail will start from l’Abella going into the Pyrenean direction to Salarsa valley characterized with large-scale landscapes and plenty centenarian oaks. You will descend to Sant Valenti de Salarsa church, Romanesque work, and continue downhill in a valley to the road between Beget and Oix, where you will find Pont de Bolassell, a Romanesque cottage. In this picturesque and quiet place, you will have your picnic.
You will continue on horseback uphill on narrow but comfortable path in a dense forest until Coll de Salomó where you will reach the highest peak of the day (850 m). You will continue on a hill for 6 or 7 kilometres to Sant Andreu de Bestacrá, and then on a descent where you will be able to see a hundred-years-old holm oak stuck between rocks. You will continue downhill to Oix, full of natural areas of incredible beauty. Accommodation in a rural house.
Day 3 - Up to the highest peaks
Today you ride through the mountains. In the morning, you will pass through scented oak forests and across the beautiful gorges that characterize this mountainous region known as Alta Garrotxa. You will ride towards Vall d’Hortmoier, passing some gorges that will allow the riders to have a bath. You will cross the Llerca River and continue up to the Talaxà peak, a picturesque place with an old quarter from where you will be able to see the route of the day before and to enjoy a snack. From this point, you will start the descent to Vall de Sadernes, where you will have to walk for 1 kilometre. You will arrive to the Sant Aniol River where you will be able to enjoy a bath (without the horses). You will go back up to Coll de Bassegoda. After half an hour, you will enjoy your picnic in a 1.200 m height plain. You will continue on the top of a mountain range and will descent to Albanyà, through dense holm-oak woods, steep mountains and amazing views of la Garrotxa. Tracks and paths will lead you to the Muga River, which you will cross to arrive at Albanyà, a land of orchards, forests and hunting.
Day 4 - Swimming with horses
A day of fast-paced and exciting horseback riding and you will swim with the horses in a lake. An unforgettable experience! You leave Albana and ride down the Muga River. At Boadella Lake, surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery, you will stop for a refreshing swim with the horses. Always a pleasure for both humans and horses! You then continue through the Alt Empordan countryside full of vineyards and olive groves and on through the Albera Nature Park. You will arrive at Perelada, a gorgeous medieval village, famous because of its “cava” (sparkling wine). You will be able to stroll around Perelada and even to try your luck at the village’s Casino.
Day 5 - L'Alvera and Coastal Vineyards
Today you leave the mountains and ride through the Albera and the coastal area of Costa Brava towards the sea. From Peralada you will head to Llançà, a nice little historical village built close to the sea but quite hidden inland so it was easier for the inhabitants to protect themselves back in the 9th century! The medieval ages church and tower are the two characteristic monuments to be seen anywhere from the village.
Your hotel is in the old city centre and a nice 20-minute stroll to the beach. Llançà has the great amount of 23 beaches so you will sure find one you will love.
Dinner and accommodation.
Day 6 - To the sea!
Today, you will ride out of Llança in order to take the horses to a cute little bay where to enjoy a nice swim with the horses in an amazing landscape. You will ride to the Natural Park of Albera and then back to Llançà.
Free time, farewell dinner and accommodation.
Day 7 - Bye
After breakfast, you will leave the hotel and be driven to Barcelona Airport. Arrive at the airport at 11.30 am.

Travel: Fly to Barcelona or Girona where you can book a transfer for 90 EUR / person round trip. Transfer can be booked in advance.
At Barcelona airport pick-up time is 6:00pm. Book a flight that arrive no later than 4 pm and going home after 1:00pm.
At Girona airport pick-up time is 7:15pm. On departure you will arrive at Girona airport about 10:00am.
Number of riders: Normally a minimum of 4 and maximum of 12.
