The Program

Sunday: Arrival at the Equestrian Center between 6:00pm and 8.00pm. Dinner and stay overnight at the farm.

Monday: In the morning you start with a test ride in the surrounds of the Equestrian Center. After lunch, the horses are loaded in the truck and you will be driven by minibus to Saint-Paul-lès-Durance, an ancient Roman port that was used to transport lumber and goods from the Alps to Marseille and the Mediterranean coast. You start riding on trails in the forest, along the vineyards and through the village of Jouques. Then further to the village of Peyrolles that was once a strategic point on the road between Aix-en-Provence and Haute Provence. Its castle, originally from Roman times, was re-built in the typical Provencal style in the late C17 or early C18. Dinner and overnight at a charming guesthouse.

Tuesday: You ride in Mediterranean vegetation around Peyrolles. Pines, green oaks and many herbs like rosemary and thyme will perfume your ride. You follow the old Verdon Canal, which was built in 1865 to bring water from the Alps to Aix-en-Provence and its many fountains. As you continue north of Sainte-Victoire, you will see many sheepfolds and Roman ruins. A big lunch cooked by your assistant is waiting for you in the shade of the pine trees. In the afternoon, you will continue to Lake Bimont, where you can enjoy a dip in the turquoise water with your horse! Overnight near the village of Vauvenargues, famous for its castles, and the house located in the castle park that was bought in 1958 by Picasso and where he lived until 1962.

Wednesday: You start riding on the north side of Mount Sainte-Victoire, and follow the Gardiol woods and the river Vacon towards Rians, an important crossroads between the Alps and the coast. Tradition has it that Hannibal took this route over the Alps before his conquest of Rome.

Thursday: You leave the vineyards behind you and ride south, on the sunny side of Sainte-Victoire. You will see high white limestone cliffs contrasting with the green forest, before arriving at the hotel near Beaurecueil .

Friday: You conclude this fascinating ride on the west side of the Sainte-Victoire Mountain and a spectacular view of Bimont dam that flows into the Verdon River. You then ride near a Roman aqueduct and to the Bibemus quarry. From antiquity to the eighteen century, monuments in Aix-en-Provence were built with these red rocks. The artist Cezanne fell in love with this landscape with its mix of rocks and vegetation. He made 11 oil paintings and 16 watercolors near here. The ride ends near Aix-en-Provence in Saint-Marc-Jaumegarde where you will enjoy your final lunch. In the afternoon, you will be taken to Aix-en-Provence by minibus to visit Cezanne's workshop, walk around town and maybe do some shopping. In the late afternoon, you will be taken back to the train station or airport. You will be at Aix-en-Provence TGV at 5.30pm or Marseille airport at 6:00pm
